As any trombone instructor or seasoned trombonist knows, the slide is very delicate. It’s perfect alignment and clearances are extremely fragile, yet critical to the playability of the instrument. Beginning students typically but unknowingly abuse and damage the slide before developing the careful respect necessary to keep it in good working order. Dropping the slide onto anything but the softest carpet will ruin the desired smooth glide, and at the very least, will need a trip to an experienced trombone repair person.
